We have survived our fourth week.....hurrah!

Today I will leave "the compound" for my first time since coming....except for the quick runs on Saturday to the local Walmart to buy food and electrolyte solutions......and I am mighty excited......My first chance to see any of Acapulco....we are taking a tour...and I don't really care what we go to see!

Last night we got the offer of an evening off.....but only if everybody stayed on their mats and upright for the entire class....no sitting, no kneeling, no barfing in the back of the room.......I felt so bad for the folks who were really suffering....for as soon as someone even looked like they were going to quit, all three hundred of us began to urge them to hang in there.......one woman had to be carried out after class and taken to the clinic for an IV......It was quite the experience.

And now Bikram can always remind us (and none too gently) that when we are sufficiently motivated, we can complete class! "NO LAZY ASSES!"

We have finished with anatomy......and spent most of the past week doing posture clinic, which is a huge challenge for those of us who are not great with memorization. But we forge along, and the teachers keep assuring us that "eventually and in the future" we will find that dialoug just flowing out of us.

We will see.

I hope you all are well back in Columbia.

It's the Rainy season...

Hi All,
Thanks for your words of encouragement, prayers, positive energy, and warm fuzzies.
Its the end of Week 4 and I`m catching up on email.
Last weekend was spent studying for an Anatomy test and memorizing Dialogue; no time for anything else other than the essentials (hydrating, resting, & eating).

Week 4 started out with Bikram stopping yoga class early--at Camel Pose. He was furious because people in the yoga room were sitting out postures. Later that evening when we all gathered for PM-Lecture he concluded that this wasn´t solely our fault. Thank you. The lack of air circulation in the room was the problem. It is the Rainy season (also hurricane season) here in Acapulco...lots of humidity in the air. Now, there are more than 10 fans in the yoga room and the doors to go in-out of the room are kept open during class.

This week, he kept us up late 3 nights in a row. Bikram gave us Friday night off, but we had to work our tails off in PM-yoga class to earn it. This meant that not one person could sit out or step out of the room during class.

In Posture Clinics this week we covered 4-5 postures. For Week 5 we will start with Triangle Pose.

Have a great week. If you get Columbus Day off, enjoy it.
Take care,
iram

Hello from BikramLand!

There is a cold making the rounds, and it is trying to get me....so I am gulping Vit C and trying to sleep more......studying the dialogue takes a lot of time but I am not actually suffering as much as some.....and I can see that I will get it eventually....I am just really out of practice with memorization.

The drama continues with the other pupils....so many are just lovely people.....wide range of ages (though clearly I am on the old end and there are no so many of us...but I am far from being the oldest!) and a wide range of cultures.......we have a couple of medical doctors, folks fresh out of college, insurance salesmen, coaches, lots of massage therapists....you name it. Lots of tattoos....tattoos in places I would never have considered...tattoos of every shape and description...lots of truly beautiful people.....I am amazed and fascinated by my classmates. I love to watch them.

Bikram himself is such a character....he so clearly loves his job......loves it. Loves to shock people. I am glad when he is out of town because we get more sleep. I am glad when he is here because he is a hoot....teaches a great class....and musing on his lecture materials is interesting.

I am completely aware that nobody here in any position of power has any interest in my opinion...and that's really rather restful. I just come to class, do the yoga, study for the ridiculous anatomy tests and glean everything I can from the experience.

This week I seem to be doing better with the dizziness, and feel just plain happy to be here.

Got to go catch some sleep now and give my roomate her turn at the internet connection.

Take care

Pamela

1st Dispatch from Pamela

Hello Kat and everybody,

Hope all is well with you. I believe Iram told me she has been in contact with you already....she is better with the email routine than I.

I am lucky to get online on the weekend.....my roommate is big with the internet.....she and her boyfriend......but it is no big deal for me......I am happy to do it on the weekend, and she is a fabulous roommate...very sweet and quiet.

I am doing ok....struggling with the dialogue.....but doing ok physically.

The first week was truly rough.....I just could not seem to get on top of the hydration thing.....but am pretty good now, although I continued to have some dizziness in class throughout last week.

My attitude is good.......when Bikram decides to keep us up late just to teach us discipline, I breathe deep and suck it up. I truly hate that aspect of the training.....but am working on detaching from any particular ownership.....just being one of the 'herd' as one staffer referred to us.

I do understand however, that nobody cares what I think. No problem for me. I kind of enjoy this no responsibility for anybody thing....it's a real change of pace.

Are you coming to visit during training? I know you were thinking about it, but didnt know what you decided.

Overall, I am enjoying myself. This is a great challenge. Today I was swimming in the salt water pool and managed to get my recalcitrant left leg wrapped around my right leg for the very first time.....so now I know it is possible, which gives me hope.

You know, Marsha gave me her email address before I left, and I left it at home.....feel free to share this email with anybody who might be interested...then if they want to write, I will answer them.

Bikram is a sweetheart in many ways. My heart feels open to him...but I am a typical american, and not prone in any case to hero worship, so some of this stuff is a bit over the top for me....but no problem......I'll take what I can from the training and leave the rest behind.

Lots of interesting folks here. Lots of stories.

I was amazed that folks quit and went home before the first week was even up. And one guy was 'invited' to leave. I'll tell you that story in person. It won't be the last interesting incident I am sure.

Take care.

I am off to study.

Iram's 2nd week

Hi Kat,
Its Saturday morning and I´m checking my email before the 8am yoga class.
First I´ll answer your questions.
-I´ve met trainees from the Hampden studio, Tenleytown studio, there is one that I remember meeting from the Falls Church studio. I met Mark-he has relocated to Hawaii, and I met Upkar.
-This week all of us trainees finished reciting Half Moon on the stage of the lecture hall for Bikram. Around here he is known as "Boss". I know of 1 trainee that chose not to go up on stage to cue EVEN after Bikram talked to him.
-So far Bikram has been with us to teach the 2nd yoga class of the day as well as lead evening lecture/posture clinic.
-The rest of the staff incudes Dale, Yellena, Katie, Lindsay, Lynn, Jim, Luis and Maneli. OH. Emmy has been here all week. What pearls of wisdom she has!

This week I´ve been dealing with a cold & congestion. When I talked to Lynn she said to keep me chest expanded & to take vitamin C. I´m glad its Saturday because there is only 1 class left to take. Other people are sick with colds too.

Not as much vomiting this week as last week. There are little trash cans at the back of the room. When you feel like throwing-up you walk back there and do it in one of the trash cans...if you make it in time.

I talked to one trainee that had to have an IV. There is a physician here on the hotel grounds.

People still drink water a lot in between most of the postures; I guess I feel like I was well prepared for the postures, working out in the heat/humidiy by you and Emily. Some trainess started practicing 6 months ago or less.

By the middle of the week I started to be able to get up from final Savasana sooner than I had been able to last week.

Class will start soon...check-in with ya later.
